HOW TO READ THE SKY

How To Read the Sky
, is the first body of work that I have completed here, in my new studio, on Gabriola Island.

In my work of the last two decades, as an artist, I have often documented the intersection of human constructions in opposition or contrast to the powerful forces of nature and erosion.

This suite of paintings marks a departure for me . Here I have pondered (in paint) not the impact of nature on our fragile human constructs but instead the sky itself. The sky, this combination of light, movement and moisture traveling as it always does whether we choose to observe it or not.

My experience of this time on Degnen Bay, where my studio is located, has not been so much one of observation or documentation but of literally reading the sky. I have found it to be a compelling narrative.

As an artist I recognize my need to somehow claim this place. and so I have done this suite of paintings. In reality, I am grateful to be a reader and a custodian of this particular point of view at this place in time on Degnen Bay, Gabriola, BC.
